DELSU Students Elect New Student Union Government SUG Executives

                                    

The students of Delta State University DELSU, Abraka have elected the new leaders of the institution’s Student Union Government SUG.The exercise which was scheduled to hold on April 30 but was postponed because of an aggrieved aspirants’ suit.

Those that monitored the election reported that the exercise was peaceful as security personnel covered all strategic points within the voting area.The open ballot exercise started at 9.00 am and lasted for four hours while counting of votes started immediately and ended at 4.00 pm. ASUU President Blames Insurgency On Bad Governance

 

Dr Nasir I. Fagge, the National President of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), said the security challenges Nigeria can be attributed to the inability of government to provide responsible leadership and quality education for the citizenry.

The ASUU President said; “We believe that the Nigerian people are not being presented with sufficient options to choose from. The same crops of leaders have been recycling themselves from one party to another, scrambling for power. We cannot keep doing the same thing and expect different result. The ruling elites have systematically edged out the people from governance equation.’’

While lamenting the level of corruption in the nation, Fagge said the present crops of leaders has continued to milk the nation dry under the guise of privatisation.

3 Aspirants Protest Selection Procedure In UNIZIK VC Race

                                   

As the race for the position of Vice-Chancellor, Nnamdi Azikiwe University UNIZIK, Awka hots up, several contestants for the position have kicked against the selection procedure adopted by the Governing Council.

 

The aspirants, which includes the provost of UNIZIK College of Medicine, Professor Clement Ezechukwu, a professor of Accounting, Benjamin Osisioma, and another professor at the Awka campus of the university submitted their petitions to the chairman of the governing council, Air Vice Marshall Larry Koinyan (rtd).

 

They accused the selection committee headed by the chairman of the governing council of jettisoning the guidelines stipulated during the executive session of the council on April 24. However, the lecturers of UNIZIK vowed not to accept any move to impose an unpopular person as the next VC of the university.

FUTO Management Backed by ASUU on Battle Against Land Encroachment

                                  

The Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU, Federal University of Technology, Owerri  FUTO Branch has expressed its solidarity with the University Management in its battle against the unscrupulous activities of some indigenes of host communities on encroachment on FUTO land.

Speaking during a solidarity visit to the Vice-Chancellor, the Vice Chairman of ASUU, Engr Dr K. N. Nwaigwe frowned at the crisis caused by the indigenes of host community which led to destruction of University properties worth millions of naira as well as buildings under construction at the new FUTO Staff Quarters.

In his response, the Vice Chancellor, Prof Chigozie C. Asiabaka thanked the Union for their solidarity visit, stressing that their support was encouraging in the fight against encroachment on the University’s land. He lamented the wanton destruction of University Properties by indigenes of Umuanunu village, Obinze and Umuchima village, Ihiagwa communities.

Nyanya bomb blast Mastermind Studied at a UK University

                                        

The April 14th, 2014 Nyanya Abuja bomb blast suspect, Aminu Sadiq Ogwuche, son of a retired Nigerian soldier, attended a Welsh University in the United Kingdom. 

Ogwuche, who is the alleged mastermind of the Nyanya bomb blast that led to the death of at least 88 people is believed to have been radicalized while studying at the University of South Wales (formerly the University of Glamorgan). He reportedly dropped out of the University in 2010.

Mr Ogwuche who referred to himself as ‘The Lion of God’ was arrested in Sudan where he is said to be learning Arabic at the the International University of Africa. Ogwuche alleged to be “UK-born” has been denied by British officials who insisted he is not a British national.

Makurdi Schools Fortified With Security Over Threats

                                   

Security have been beefed up around schools in Makurdi after letters from the dreaded Boko Haram sect was discovered at Government College, Makurdi, Benue state. It would be recalled that the school received letters from the Boko Haram sect threatening to attack the school and kidnap boys who will marry the secondary school girls abducted in Chibok.

The commissioner for Police in Benue state, Mr Adams Audu said during a visit to the school that all the boarding schools in the state are covered by the security operatives. In his remarks, the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of the Zone, Mr Abiola Adeniji commended the proactive measure put in place by the Benue Command to arrest the situation. 

In her reaction, Mrs Elizabeth Ugoh who is the Commissioner for Education in the state thanked the police for their timely intervention in the matter. Ugoh urged the members of staff of the school to be carefull in the way they present the report to parents of the students as negative reports would escalate the issue and make parents pick their children from the schools.

Immigration Officials Beats UNICAL Lecturer For Parking In Unauthorised Space

                                 

A University of Calabar lecturer, Mr. Okon Effiong Ekpenyong, was beaten and severely wounded by men of the Nigeria Immigration Service in Cross River State for illegal parking and making a u-turn in an unauthorised space in the airport.

Boko Haram Sent A Letter To Prepare Schools For Attacks Coming Soon

                            

Two letters written in pidgin English suspected to be sent by the dreaded Boko Haram sect have been seen inside the classroom and staff room of a school in Benue State with the content of the letters a threat of impending kidnapping of school boys.

This is coming few weeks after fundamentalist Islamic sect kidnapped over 200 schoolgirls from Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State.

Nigerian Unemployed Graduates to Receive N19k monthly allowance

At the on-going National Conference, a committee is suggesting that all unemployed graduates in Nigeria should earn a monthly allowance equivalent to the allowance of members of the National Youth Service Corps, which is N19,800.

Punch reports that the conference’s Committee on Law, Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Reform made the recommendation but it can only fall through if it's accepted by the Federal Government.

A member of the committee said the recommendation was one of the ways the committee members felt that crime could be reduced in the country. He told Punch;

"The recommendation is our own way of finding solutions to the rising wave of crime in the country and to also force the government to do the needful for the increasing number of unemployed graduates in the country. We have done our part and it is left for the delegates to either reject or accept it at plenary.”
