A University of Calabar lecturer, Mr.
Okon Effiong Ekpenyong, was beaten and severely wounded by men of the
Nigeria Immigration Service in Cross River State for illegal parking and
making a u-turn in an unauthorised space in the airport.
The alleged officials involved in the
beating were a deputy comptroller of immigration; a chief superintendent
of immigration; a male guard on duty and female junior official whose
names are being withheld. Continue...
The battered lecturer said, “I can swear
that those names I mentioned were among others who battered me. I saw
their name tags before I fainted. My 10-year-old son was beside me all
through the period I was being beaten and he can also confirm that if
given the opportunity.”
It was gathered that the case was
formally transferred to the state police headquarters by the Divisional
Police Officer in charge of the Airport Division, Mr. Asuquo Ebong.
Ekpenyong said he is recovering slowly due to his diabetic medical condition.
When contacted, the Public Relations
Officer of NIS, Cross River State Command, Mary Abang, declined comments
on the telephone and wants the reporters to come to her office.
