University Women Trash UNN Professors With 2 Goals

University Women Association (UWA) on Thursday, 29 May, 2014 defeated University of Nigeria Professors with 2 goals to nil in a novelty football match played as part of the activities to mark the end of tenure of the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Bartho Okolo. The match, played at Akanu Ibiam stadium, witnessed large turnout of staff and students of the University, who not only enjoyed the thrills of the game but also marvelled at the level of physical fitness displayed by the players.

Captain of the UWA, Professor (Mrs) Antonia Achike , opened the score line in the 19th minute of  the first half when she broke the defence line of UNN Professors manned by Prof. Enyama, Prof. Sam Onyegegbu and Prof. Ben Nwanguma,  before sliding the ball pass the goalkeeper, Prof. Okoye.
Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof. C.O.T. Ugwu, who captained the Professors’ team, made efforts to salvage the one goal deficit but his shots did not bother UWA goalkeeper as they drifted away from the goal post. Continue after the cut...

The UWA team continued to threaten the defence of the Professors in the second half until one of the Professors committed a fowl in the penalty area. The spot kick was converted by Mrs Chizoba Onah to give the University Women 2 goals lead. Dean, Faculty of Biological Sciences, Prof. F.C. Chilaka, who was introduced after the second goal, tried to add spark to the attack of the Professors’ team, but his efforts were well contained until the referee blew the final whistle.

“We deliberately allowed them to win so that we can eat our supper this evening”, said Prof. Ugwu, captain of the Professors’ team, when he presented his team for a consolatory medal from the Vice-Chancellor (what a flimsy excuse, they just felt the Power of a Woman). “We proved that what a man can do a woman can do better”, said Prof (Mrs) Achike, captain of the UWA team when her team received the champion’s trophy from the Vice-Chancellor (Go Girls! Go Girls!! Go Girls!!! Oops! Meant to say Go Ladies!).

In a related development, the grand finale of staff inter-faculty football competition played after the novelty match, saw champions from Nsukka campus beating champions from University of Nigeria Enugu Campus (UNEC)5-3 aggregate in a penalty shoot out. The match had ended in a barren draw after 90 minutes of mouth-watering encounter between the two teams.

But it was the goal keeper of the UNN team, Chinedu Oranyi, from the security department, who stole the show when he saved two penalty shots to hand over two goals advantage to his team. In a post match interview with newsmen, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Bartho Okolo said that sports is a medium of Knowledge transfer, which should be encouraged at all levels of education.  He described the UNN as a great University with great people, and urged staff and students to join hands in making the Institution a World Class University.
