The management of Bingham University, New Karu has suspended about 1,000 students of the institution for their failure to attend a church service held on campus. Bingham University is owned by the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) which values building a positive moral and religious attitude into their students.

The suspension is to last for 2-weeks while the affected students are to return to school at the expiry of the sanction with their parents. According to the statement from the school to the parents: It read, “This is to inform you that your ward failed to attend worship service on Wednesday, June 11, 2014; this constitutes a contravention of the university rules and regulations as contained in the students’ handbook. The vice-chancellor has directed the suspension of your ward from Thursday, June 12, 2014 to Sunday, June 22, 2014.

“You are expected to bring back your ward to the university on Monday, June 23 2014 with a letter of undertaking to be of good behavior. The letter is to be countersigned by you.”

However, information coming from the university campus has it that the students are threatening to resist the suspension even as the school authorities have beefed up security on campus to forestall any protest.

TASUED SUG President Critically Injured During Protest

The student’s protest at the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijagun over the restriction of students who didn’t pay for school fees to write exams by the school management has left a bitter sour as the Student Union Government (SUG) President of the school was critically injured in the process.

The TASUED SUG president, Comrade Sunday Ekeyokpa, was reportedly hit with gun butt by one of the security men during the students protest which had affected his brain as he is now behaving abnormally. One of the students leaders, Hamed Falola confirmed the health condition of the students president. He said when contacted: “Yes, Sunday is not okay, his health condition is now questionable because of his attack by the OP MESA in the school last week.”

Folola appealed to the state government to come to the aid of the SUG president so that his life will be saved. The management of the institution through the Vice-Chancellor had earlier released a statement blaming the insensitivity of the student body for the protest that caused the damage of properties worth millions of naira.

                                                   veritas university abuja logo
The management of University of Abuja has order the immediate indefinite closure of the institution following the latest student’s protest that affected the staff quarters of the institution. It will be recalled that the UNIABUJA students are protesting the strike embarked upon by the LASU chapter of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) that has crippled academic activities in the school. ASUU LASU chapter on their part are on strike due to what they perceive as abuse of power and gross-misconduct by the institution’s Vice-Chancellor. They are also protesting the non-payment of their check off dues since 2010.

The LASU students are all directed to vacate the hostels and university premises as further developments on the matter would be communicated in due course. The notice which came from the office of the Vice-Chancellor and has been circulated around the school also said that the members of the Governing Council of the University will be meeting to discus the way forward.

LASU Students Wants School Fees Reduced In Naira Not Percentage

The representatives of the Lagos State Univeristy (LASU), Ojo has called on the state government to reduce the hiked school fees in naira instead of the percentage calculations as the tuition is still on the high side. It will be recalled that the Lagos state governor, Babatunde Fashola announced the reduction of the LASU school fees by 34 t0 60 percent.

In their reaction, the Student Union Government (SUG) President of LASU, Nurudeen Yusuf said that the reduction is not enough as he insisted on the payment of N46,500.00 and  N65,500.00 for old and new students respectively. The SUG PRO, Adekoya Joseph called on the governor to do the reduction in naira and kobo instead of the percentage reduction as it is not showing the real amount they are meant to pay as school fees.

He also wondered why other state-owned institutions in different states with less vibrant economies than Lagos are paying less amounts than students of LASU when the economy of Lagos is more viable than some countries in West Africa.

The students of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile-Ife, has locked down the school as they protest the recent school fees hike by the management of the school. It will be recalled that the OAU management recently increased the school fees of its newly admitted students from N37,150 and N42,150 to N 82,400, N92,700 and N95,700 (acceptance fee inclusive), depending on faculties. Old student’s school fees were also increased.

Students who are currently protesting the hike locked down offices and buildings like the senate building, computer building and the main entrance gate that leads into the university campus. Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Professor Bamitale Omole has called on the students to stop the protest and accept the new school fees regime as it is meant to ensure that the students receive quality education. However, the students rejected the call from the VC and said that they are no longer ready to negotiate with the management as previous talks failed.
