The University of Nigeria, Nsukka has again made history by appointing Dr. Mrs Chinwe Nwogo Ezeani as the first female University Librarian of UNN since the inception of the institution. Dr. Ezeani is a Chartered Librarian and former Deputy Librarian in charge of Public Services, Research and Development division of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Library reputed to be the largest University Library in West Africa.
She started
her professional career in 1991 at the British Council Enugu, as a
Regional Assistant Librarian of the South Eastern Zone before joining
the services of University of Nigeria, Nsukka from where she rose to the
position of University Librarian. She has
over 23 years of post-qualification cognate experience as well as over
45 published works in reputable local and international journals. Continue after the cut...
In
addition, she has won some local and international grants such as
African Academy of Science, Nairobi Kenya grant (1998) and Association
of African Universities (2000). She is
also a member of the Nigerian Library Association (NLA) and a two time
Vice Chairman of Nigeria Library Association Information Technology
(NLAIT) Section as well as a current Council member of the NLA.
According
to her, “I am grateful to God for been able to clinch the
position. I hope to make a change and do something different as the
first female librarian and I believe that with God by my side, I will
not disappoint people”. As the new
Librarian, Dr. (Mrs) Ezeani disclosed her vision and mission statements
as thus: “As a centre of intense intellectual inquiry, the UNN,
Library shares with the University the aspiration to be the most dynamic
learning environment in the world.
In this
desired future, the Library should ensure that its collections remain
forward-looking, diverse in breath and form, open to browsing and of
world renowned quality. Through promotion, the University Library should
make people aware of the resources available to them, and through
innovation, make access to these resources easier. She
remarked that in order to achieve this mandate, the Library needs to
collaborate with an expanding circle of partners which ultimately would
yield unified access, broaden knowledge, and enhance services.
Hence, her
vision statement was “to identify, acquire, organize, preserve, provide
and disseminate resources of enduring value that will support teaching,
learning and research at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka”. Dr. (Mrs)
Ezeani, a dynamic hard working, results-driven, decisive, proactive and
resilient lady is married to Prof. Emmanuel O. Ezeani of the Department
of Political Science and a member of the Governing Council, University
of Nigeria, Nsukka. The marriage is blessed with four children.
